Lisa Pizzato has spent years responding to difficult calls as president of Paws of Dixie Animal Rescue, a nonprofit based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. But one recent phone call stood out from the rest. An elderly woman contacted Pizzato to report a group of dogs living near a remote, wooded property. The woman believed the dogs were in trouble and needed immediate help.

Pizzato drove out to the area and followed the woman down a long road that led to a deteriorating house hidden deep in the woods. Many of the homes in that part of the county were abandoned after a tornado tore through the region in 2011, leaving behind structures that were never repaired or safely secured.
As she approached the house, Pizzato quickly saw what the woman had been worried about. Near the structure sat a pile of six young puppies huddled together among trash and debris. Standing close by was their mother, clearly frightened and growling as Pizzato approached. The dogs appeared to have been surviving on their own for some time, exposed to the elements with no protection or consistent care.

Pizzato carefully secured the mother and her puppies and transported them to a foster home where they could rest and recover. The rescue team named the mother Georgia, and each of the puppies received a name starting with the letter G: Ginny, Gina, Grace, Grady, Grant, and Gerald.
Once in foster care, the dogs were given deworming treatments and flea medication. They were also able to warm up, eat regularly, and settle into a safe environment for the first time. For Pizzato, seeing the family finally out of danger was a relief.
“It was a good day,” Pizzato told The Dodo.
While this rescue ended positively, Pizzato says many others do not. She regularly receives calls about animals in need, especially in rural areas where access to veterinary care is limited, and shelters are often full. Paws of Dixie frequently has to make difficult decisions due to a lack of space and resources.

Pizzato hopes this story encourages people in the community to take preventive steps, including spaying and neutering their pets. She also urges residents to be alert to irresponsible breeding and to report situations where animals may be living in unsafe conditions.
In this case, the outcome was a hopeful one. All six puppies have since been adopted into permanent homes. Georgia remains with her foster family and is continuing to receive care while waiting for the right adopter.

Despite the emotional and physical toll that rescue work can take, Pizzato remains committed to helping animals whenever possible. In a Facebook post shared by the rescue, Paws of Dixie emphasized the importance of responding when animals need help.
“We know there are good people here,” the organization wrote. “Because when we got the call, we answered.”
